Live True Profile: Kelley McRae
A Do-It-Herself Musician’s Year of Walking on Air
|
From February to December 2011, you played over 120 shows in 31 states. You can tell us: which was your favorite? You named your van “Proč Ne”, which is Czech for “Why not?” How does a gal from Mississippi know Czech? How did your families react when you told them you and your husband would be living in a van while you went from show to show? Most of your tour was “house shows,” meaning you performed in living rooms, backyards, porches, carports and sunrooms. How did you get people to open their homes to you? You’ve said you showered in truck stops and that the facilities there were surprisingly nice! |
What’s it like working and living with your husband day in and day out, especially in such a small space? We read something about it taking 11,000 miles on the road before you found “the perfect hat.” What was it? You’ve said that while performing here in True Citrus’ hometown Baltimore you learned to be comfortable on stage and to feel that “I didn’t have to be a skinnier, prettier version of me – I could just be me.” But let’s face it. You ARE skinny and pretty. How do you do it? How do True Citrus products fit into your on-the-road lifestyle? Famous filmmaker Wim Wenders said in an interview that your songs "Time," and "Break Us" moved him to tears. You sing “Time will take the best of our bodies ... time will take the best of our families ... time will take the best of our dreams.” Ouch!
